Spyware,
what it is? Simply stated, it is a
program, or programs, that has become installed on
your computer, with or without your knowledge, and
it may gather data from files on your computer and
convey this information to external parties
without your knowledge. Other terms of a
similar meaning are adware and scumware. If
you use a lot of shareware or freeware, it's easy
to unwittingly download "spyware." These
programs sometimes come as part of other software,
and they can meddle with your surfing or connect
to Web sites without permission.
Visit Scumware.com
to learn how to rid your computer of such
nuisances. Their page on Ridding
Yourself Of Scumware has a link to the site
where you can download Ad-aware.
Or, go directly to the source for Ad-aware, Lavasoft.
The latest version, 6.0, was released in February
2003. The basic version, which is sufficient
for many home users, is free. Two more
advanced editions, Ad-aware Plus, and Ad-ware
Professional can be purchased and downloaded from
the site. So, you should at least get the basic
edition. Install it. Run it. You
may be surprised to learn your computer has
programs on it that you did not know about.
Ad-aware allows you to remove them.
By removing these programs, you are not only
clearing your computer of them and thereby
stopping them from sending out personal
information from your computer, you might also
notice a slight improvement in performance, since
spyware, or scumware, runs in the background on
your computer and consumes system resources.
